May 21, 2026 Quilting is an art that combines creativity, precision, and technique. Even experienced quilters find new ways to improve their craft by learning fresh skills and exploring advanced tools. Recently, Sandra and I had the chance to spend two full days at Moore’s Sewing Center in Brea, California, training with the experts from Grace Company. This hands-on experience focused on mastering Grace longarm quilting machines and computerized quilting systems, offering a deep dive into techniques that elevate quilting projects to a professional level.

Our time at Moore’s Sewing Center was packed with practical lessons, creative exercises, and valuable insights. Whether you are interested in computerized quilting or want to refine your free-motion quilting skills, this training provided tools and knowledge that can transform your quilting journey.

Learning Advanced Computerized Quilting Techniques

One of the highlights of the training was exploring computerized quilting with pantographs. Pantographs are continuous line designs that guide the quilting machine to create smooth, consistent patterns across the quilt surface. Using the Grace Company’s computerized system, we learned how to:

  • Select and customize pantograph designs to fit different quilt sizes and styles

  • Program the machine for precise stitching, reducing errors and improving efficiency

  • Maintain smooth machine movement to avoid puckering or uneven stitches

This hands-on practice helped us understand how computerized quilting can save time while producing professional-quality results. For example, by adjusting stitch length and speed settings, we could create delicate floral patterns or bold geometric shapes with equal ease.

Strengthening Free-Motion Quilting Skills

While computerized quilting offers precision, free-motion quilting brings a personal, artistic touch to quilts. The training included focused sessions on improving control and creativity in free-motion quilting. We practiced:

  • Consistent movement techniques to maintain even stitches

  • Creative texture effects by varying stitch density and direction

  • Troubleshooting common issues like thread tension and needle selection

These exercises helped build confidence in using the Grace longarm machine manually, allowing for more expressive quilting designs. For instance, by practicing circular and spiral motions, we learned how to add dynamic texture that enhances the quilt’s visual appeal.

Connecting with Fellow Quilters and Experts

One of the most rewarding parts of the two-day training was the opportunity to connect with other quilting enthusiasts and instructors. Sharing experiences and tips created a supportive learning environment. We exchanged ideas on:

  • Best practices for machine maintenance

  • Techniques for handling different fabric types

  • Creative ways to combine pantographs with free-motion quilting

This interaction not only enriched our skills but also expanded our quilting community, providing ongoing support and inspiration.

Bringing New Techniques to Future Projects

The knowledge gained at Moore’s Sewing Center will directly impact our future quilting projects. We plan to integrate computerized quilting designs for efficiency and precision while using free-motion quilting to add unique textures and personal flair. This balanced approach will help us create quilts that are both beautiful and professionally finished.

For example, a future project might start with a computerized pantograph background and then feature free-motion quilting for detailed borders or focal points. This combination allows for creative freedom without sacrificing quality or consistency.

Why Continuing Education Matters in Quilting

Quilting is a craft that evolves with new tools and techniques. Attending workshops and training sessions like this one is essential for growth. It keeps skills sharp, introduces new methods, and inspires fresh ideas. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional quilter, investing time in education leads to better results and greater satisfaction.

By learning directly from experts and practicing on advanced machines, quilters can push their boundaries and produce work that stands out. This ongoing learning process is what keeps quilting exciting and rewarding.

Our two days of expert training at Moore’s Sewing Center with Grace Company left us inspired and ready to apply new skills to our quilting projects. If you want to improve your quilting techniques and explore the possibilities of computerized and free-motion quilting, consider seeking out similar hands-on learning opportunities. The right training can open doors to creativity and craftsmanship you might not have imagined.
